Evacuated to

When year 4 arrived at school on the morning of Tuesday 22nd May it was evident that a tremendous effort had been made by children, their parents and the staff to dress in a style appropriate to 1940, complete with gas mask boxes.

The day had finally arrived for our evacuation to the country and after a long bus ride we reached Tenterden, where, with an air of excitement and trepidation we boarded the steam train to Wales!

Identity cards were checked and stamped, wardens patrolled the train and the journey started. The end of the line was reached at Llaniog where we were met by the wailing of an air-raid siren.

The line had been bombed so it was about turn back to Tenterden!

We sat inside an Anderson shelter, learnt about food rationing, visited the signal box and, of course, spent money in the gift shop!

We returned to school having had a fun filled learning experience.
